Residents in Melbourne may have been given a surprise Friday morning. Tornado sirens in the city were unexpectedly activated with no threat of severe weather in the area.
According to a Facebook post from the Izard County Sheriff’s Office, the sirens went off around 5:45. Izard County Dispatch did not activate the sirens, and they were unable to immediately shut them off. The Melbourne Fire Department and the Izard County Office of Emergency Management were contacted, and the sirens were shut down manually.
The cause of the activation is being looked into, and the sirens will be fixed as soon as possible.
