A significant rule change for high school basketball has been announced concerning free throws. On Monday, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) announced it will alter the bonus situation and eliminate the one-and-one scenario.
Previously, teams were awarded the one-and-one bonus when their opponents committed seven fouls in a half and the two-shot double bounus when the opponent reached 10 fouls. During its meeting last month in Indianapolis, the NFHS Basketball Rules Committee decided to measure the bonus situation by each quarter instead of a half. When a team commits five fouls, its opponent will shoot two free throws for every non-shooting foul for the remainder of the period. The team fouls will reset each quarter. The rule change mirrors what is currently being enforced in the NBA and women’s college basketball.
