A pair of memorials are coming in Mountain Home Public Schools for a former assistant high school football coach and Arkansas Razorback. The Mountain Home Education Foundation is starting a scholarship in honor of the late Ryan Mallett, and the Bomber football team will be wearing commemorative decals on the back of their helmets for the upcoming season.

The 35-year-old Mallett, who had just finished his first season as a head coach at White Hall, was a drowning victim on June 27 in Destin, Florida. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office states a group of individuals in the Gulf of Mexico near the second sandbar had reportedly been struggling to make their way back to shore. Mallett went under, and lifeguards say he was not breathing when pulled out. He was later pronounced deceased at the Destin Emergency Room.

Mountain Home head coach Steve Ary says the idea for the scholarship came after he talked with Mallett’s mother Debbie.
