A search of a vehicle considered suspicious resulted in the location of an improvised explosive device (IED) early Sunday morning in Howell County. The device was safely removed, and the two occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody.
According to a Facebook post from the Howell County Sheriff’s Office, two deputies made contact with the vehicle at around 1 in an area where a wanted suspect was being sought. The deputies made contact with the occupants and discovered the passenger had active warrants for his arrest. As the warrants were being confirmed, the deputies reportedly observed an object being thrown from the vehicle.
The deputies located the item thrown from the vehicle and a second device reportedly determined to be an IED. The Missouri State Highway Patrol Bomb Squad in Jefferson City was contacted, and they arrived on the scene nearly four hours later and confirmed the devices were active explosive devices. The devices were moved to a location where they were rendered safe.
In addition, a controlled substance was reportedly located in the vehicle. The names of the suspects were not released, and the investigation is ongoing.
