Another scam is being reported by area law enforcement. The Howell County Sheriff’s Office says the latest scam deals with fraudulent sex offender registration.
According to the sheriff’s Facebook, an unknown subject is using a fictitious name of “Deputy Brooks” and advising potential victims they have missed letters of notification for sex offender registration. The individual allegedly attempted to gain $2,000 in order to clear a warrant being issued.
The sheriff’s office states it does not accept money or payments over the phone. In addition, they will only accept payments in the form of cash or a certified cashier’s check.
Anyone with questions or concerns can contact the Howell County Sheriff’s Office at 417-256-2544.
