
Another area high school golf tournament got underway Tuesday. Izard County held the first round of the Cougar Classic at the Golf Course on Turkey Mountain in Horseshoe Bend.
On the girls’ side, Salem leads the team standings with a total of 289, eight strokes ahead of Highland. Yellville-Summit is fifth at 390.
Gwyn Figgins of Highland is at the top of the individual leaderboard with an 84. For Salem, Katie Fish is second with a 93, Chloe Taylor is third with a 95, Hayden Friend is fifth with a 101, Rayan Turnbough and Jaylin Strong are tied for seventh with a 107, and Madison Busch is 10th with a 112. For Yellville-Summit, Abby Methvin is 14th with a 118, Khloey Rogers is 19th with a 133, Kamari Voight is 21st with a 139, and Olivia Layton is 22nd with a 145.
Bigelow is topping the boys’ team standings with a total of 255, and they lead Highland by one stroke. Yellville-Summit is fifth at 302, and Salem is seventh at 334.
Bigelow’s Bennett Wilson is the individual leader with a 79. Among area golfers, Elijah Wilkes of Izard County is second as he trails by a stroke, Viola’s Braden Williams is part of a three-way tie for 12th place with a 94, Yellville-Summit’s Ben Ply and Hunter Raley are tied for 15th with a 99, Ryan Stone of Viola is 19th with a 101, Matthew Whitlock of Yellville-Summit is 22nd with a 104, Salem’s Kamden Turner and Elijah Miller are part of a three-way tie for 23rd place with a 107, Brett Hill of Salem is 29th with a 120, Landen Miller of Salem is 31st with a 136, and Yellville-Summit’s Jason Whitsell is 32nd with a 146.
The final round of the tournament will be held Wednesday at the Cherokee Village South Course.
