Student athlete safety being considered during extreme heat

As the dangerous heat continues, the safety of student athletes is a top priority among school officials. Coaches are having to change practice schedules or routines, and some sporting events this week have been either postponed or canceled.

Mountain Home High School football is among the programs being affected by the heat. Bombers’ head coach Steve Ary said Tuesday the weather has tied the hands of his staff, forcing them to reshuffle their schedule.

The Mountain Home School District has two trainers on staff. Callie Hendricks is the trainer provided to the schools by Baxter Health, and Lane Alexander is another trainer hired by the district. Ary says the trainers are prepared in case an athlete suffers heat exhaustion.

The heat has forced a time change in the Mountain Home High School football team’s season opener on Friday. The Bombers’ game with Nettleton at Jonesboro has been pushed back to 7:30.
