An area man is facing a multitude of charges after shooting at a federal building and then leading police on a high speed pursuit to “see how far he could go.” A total of 13 charges have been filed against 23-year-old Jacob William Gentry-Cape of Lead Hill following the incident early Sunday morning in Harrison.
According to the probable cause affidavit, an officer was on patrol at 1:40 Sunday morning when he heard gunshots and then saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. The officer made a traffic stop due to a defective light, but as he walked up to the vehicle, Gentry-Cape took off at a high rate of speed.
As the pursuit turned off State Highway 43 onto Cottonwood Drive, Gentry-Cape’s vehicle crashed into a gate at Winkler Logistics. The suspect continued on with speeds reaching 95 miles-per-hour.
The pursuit led to a dead end road where Gentry-Cape exited the vehicle and fled. Officers, including a K9 officer, captured the suspect after a short foot pursuit.
When officers asked Gentry-Cape why he fled, he said he was “seeing how far he could go.” When asked what he had been shooting at, the suspect said “just some doors.” He later admitted to shooting at the front doors of the J. Smith Federal Building. Both north-facing doors of the building had bullet holes.
Two spent shell casings and glass smoking devices with residue were found in the vehicle.
Gentry-Cape is facing felony charges of committing a terroristic act, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, criminal mischief and fleeing in a vehicle. Misdemeanor charges include fleeing on foot, discharging a firearm within the city limits, possession of drug paraphernalia, DWI drugs, refusal to submit to a chemical test, reckless driving, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and speeding. His bond is set at $50,000.
