Saturday basketball results include MHHS boys getting past Fair Grove in Northark Border War

The Mountain Home High School boys’ basketball team was just able to avoid a three-game losing streak as they competed in the North Arkansas College Border War Shootout Saturday in Harrison. The Bombers edged out Fair Grove, Missouri, by a score of 52-51.
The Eagles were able to outscore Mountain Home in each of the first three quarters. Fair Grove built a lead as big as 10 in the second half, but the Bombers inched their way back into the game and took their first lead in the final period. The Bombers were up four with 28 seconds left when McGee Harris attempted to inbound with a baseball pass, but the ball went well past Ryder McClain and out of bounds. Brock Boatwright hit a three on the ensuing possession for the Eagles to cut the margin to one. After Fair Grove committed their remaining fouls to give, Mountain Home again turned it over again with 10 seconds left. A three-pointer was missed by Kyle Winterberg, but the Eagles got the ball back after Braiden Dewey lost his footing. A runner was attempted by Spensar Seiger, but it was off the mark, and the Bombers held on for the win.
Rhett Gilbert led Mountain Home with 18 points, and Dewey added 15. Winterberg scored 19 points for Fair Grove.
The Bombers improve to 9-3 on the season. The Eagles fall to 4-2.
Both Mountain Home teams begin a six-game home stand on Tuesday when they welcome Nettleton to Bomber Gymnasium.
A few other area boys’ teams took part in the Border War Shootout. Valley Springs routed New Covenant Academy 87-37, and Harrison beat West Plains 73-46.

Flippin hosted the last day of the Billy Ply Boys’ Classic on Saturday. The Bobcats defeated Harrisburg 55-29, and Jasper fell to Marmaduke 58-52.

The Battle of the Border came to an end Saturday at Mammoth Spring.
Viola ended up in sixth place on the girls’ bracket. The Lady Longhorns lost the consolation title game 52-25 at the hands of Willow Springs.
Mammoth Spring won the girls’ championship as they squeaked by Thayer 43-40. The host Lady Bears were led by Tay Davis with 11 points. Brynn Washam was named the tournament’s most valuable player, and she was joined on the All-Tournament team by Laney Young and Adrianna Corbett.
Izard County took home the boys’ title as they got past Mammoth Spring 50-48. Gabe Spray was the tournament’s most valuable player and the Cougars’ top scorer with 29 points, and he was joined on the All-Tournament team by Keaton Melton and Kasen Black. Garet O’Dell had 16 points for the Bears, Blake Rogers finished with 10, and both made the All-Tournament team.

Bakersfield’s girls were able to win their game in the OCHC Shootout in Weaubleau. The Lady Lions topped Wheatland by a final of 52-36.
