Since 1976, a local nonprofit organization has had a mission to protect, care for and reduce the population of neglected, abandoned, homeless, unwanted or abused animals within Baxter County and its 25-mile surrounding area. The Humane Society of North Central Arkansas, located north of Mountain Home on Arkansas Highway 201, has a particular emphasis on the canine and feline populations.
The Humane Society averages around 60 to 80 animals in the shelter and 30 to 50 adoptions every month. Shelter manager Carolyn Carter will be on an upcoming episode of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM, and she says people will surrender animals to the Humane Society for a variety of reasons.
Listen:
All animals at the shelter receive adequate food, water, shelter and medical attention. The Humane Society also operates a thrift shop to assist in securing funds necessary to operate its facilities.
In addition to the shelter and the thrift store, Carter says the Humane Society has other programs and activities.
Listen:
The Humane Society is always in need of volunteers and foster homes. Carter says anyone interested must be a member of the local nonprofit.
