A fraud alert has been issued by the Boone County Sheriff’s Office. Citizens of Boone County are being urged to be mindful of phone calls from someone claiming to represent the sheriff’s office concerning outstanding warrants.
The sheriff’s office posted on Facebook they will not call anyone about warrants. Citizens are urged not to give out their bank or credit card information.
If the phone shows the call coming from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office number, it is not from the office. If the caller uses an important name (e.g. Sheriff Roy Martin or Captain Richard Pemberton), the caller is not being honest. The sheriff’s office states they will not call a citizen to get rid of a warrant through a payment of money. Anyone receiving such a call should disregard it.
Anyone with a warrant usually can’t pay money to get it taken care of. The judge or court would have to allow that, but the decision would not come from the sheriff’s office. All warrants are issued by the court system, and the sheriff’s office will not call a citizen about a warrant.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office will only accept cash, checks, money orders and credit cards through it credit card system. No cash apps, gift cards or online systems will be accepted, and the sheriff’s office will not ask for bank account information.
Anyone receiving one of these phone calls is welcome to contact the Boone County Sheriff’s Office at 870-741-8404 to confirm the call didn’t come from the local agency.
