After being on the shelf for the last few years due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Norfork National Fish Hatchery Kids Fishing Derby returns June 8 to Quarry Park below the Norfork Dam. The hatchery will present the derby in conjunction with the Friends of the Norfork National Fish Hatchery as local youth ages 15-and-under will fish along the banks of the North Fork River adjacent to the boat launching ramp.

Friends of the Norfork National Fish Hatchery Vice President and Kids Fishing Derby Chairman Scott Sillence will be a guest on a future episode of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM. He says several kids will be at the derby fishing for prizes.

Participation for the derby is free of charge, and fishing licenses and trout permits are not necessary. Sillence says kids will receive assistance once they catch a fish during the three-hour period.

The only things participants need to bring to the North Fork River are a fishing pole, bait and tackle. Sillence gives some extra advice to help kids have a successful catch.
