A Stone County man is jailed in Baxter County after allegedly threatening to shoot three people, including putting a “peep hole” in one person, and firing two shots. The incident leading to the arrest of 63-year-old William Eugene Smith of Mountain View happened Saturday at a residence in Big Flat.

According to the probable cause affidavit from the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy met with a victim at a store in Big Flat who said Smith pointed a gun at him and fired two shots at a residence on Arkansas Highway 14. The victim told the deputy Smith was intoxicated and threatening to shoot everyone in the house. The victim and Smith went outside, Smith pointed a handgun at the victim’s head and then fired two shots into the ground. The victim said that’s when he left so he could contact law enforcement.

While meeting with the deputy, the victim contacted someone who was still in the house and found out Smith was still making threats. The Baxter County deputy was then joined by deputies from Searcy County, an Arkansas State Police trooper and a park ranger as they converged on the house to apprehend Smith.

When they arrived, the Baxter County deputy ordered Smith to come out of the house with his hands up. Smith opened the door with the handgun in one hand and then closed the door. A few minutes later, Smith opened the door again, this time without the gun, and after some negotiations, Smith was assisted to the ground and taken into custody.

While interviewing the occupants of the house, it was learned one of them has an order of protection against Smith. She had moved into the residence about a month ago unaware Smith was living there. It was agreed Smith would only be there four days, but he never left.

During the argument that day, Smith had told that person he would “put a peep hole” in her while waving a gun around.

While en route to the jail, Smith advised the deputy he was going to kill everyone in the jail, and nobody had better start anything with him.

Smith is facing three felony counts of aggravated assault and a felony charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm along with a misdemeanor charge of violation of an order of protection. He also faces a penalty enhancement for being a habitual offender. His bonds total $100,000.

Smith has three felony convictions in multiple states.
