LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KAIT/KARK) – Arkansas Secretary of Education Jacob Oliva said the state could benefit from a potential elimination of the U.S. Department of Education by the forthcoming presidential administration.

KARK said during a joint budget committee meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 13, Senator Gary Stubblefield asked Oliva about the impact the shutdown would have on individual states following reports of President-elect Donald Trump’s possible plans to eliminate the agency.

Oliva said there could be benefits from the scenario, given the lack of independence he feels states have because of the DOE funding.

He said he would like to see Congress still provide money to Arkansas to fill in what would be missing from his department.
