
A deadly officer-involved shooting occurred following a 45-minute standoff in Maumelle on Friday afternoon, according to local authorities.
Police responded to a call around 2 p.m. on Crystal Hill Road regarding an emotionally disturbed individual who was reportedly armed with a knife. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the person holding the knife and displaying erratic behavior.
Officers attempted to communicate with the individual for nearly an hour in an effort to peacefully resolve the situation. However, when the person advanced toward the officers, a Taser was deployed, but it was ineffective. The individual continued approaching officers in a threatening manner, prompting them to open fire.
The person was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. No officers were injured during the incident.
The Arkansas State Police has been called in to investigate the shooting, as is standard protocol. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.
The identity of the deceased has not been released at this time.
