The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded an equipment grant valued at approximately $30,000 from the Arkansas Opioid Recovery Partnership to enhance officer safety when handling potentially deadly substances.

The grant provides the department with a TruNarc Handheld Narcotics Analyzer, a device capable of testing for about 500 substances, including narcotics, stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, and analgesics. The analyzer allows officers to scan substances through plastic or glass, reducing the need for direct contact. This minimizes contamination risks, limits exposure, and helps preserve evidence.

The TruNarc Analyzer also produces automated, tamper-proof records with time and date-stamped scan results. These features expedite prosecutions in criminal cases and deliver clear, real-time presumptive evidence.

Sheriff’s investigators recently completed training on the use of the device and are optimistic about the benefits it will bring to local law enforcement.

The Arkansas Opioid Recovery Partnership is an initiative of the Association of Arkansas Counties and the Arkansas Municipal League. It supports Arkansans in recovery, individuals battling substance use disorder, and families impacted by the opioid epidemic.
