Saturday basketball results include MH freshmen splitting district tournament openers

Mountain Home’s freshman basketball teams had mixed results as they played their openers in the Northeast Arkansas District Tournament Saturday in West Memphis.
The Junior Lady Bombers were able to hold off West Memphis West for the 38-33 victory. Macy Farris led Mountain Home with 10 points. The Junior Lady Bombers improve to 7-12 on the season, and they’ll face Greene County Tech Monday evening at 6. The location has yet to be announced.
Mountain Home’s boys watched their season come to an end. The Junior Bombers suffered a 35-9 defeat at the hands of Marion.

The 2A-2 Junior District Tournament got underway at Mammoth Spring.
Cotter’s girls were able to advance to Monday’s semifinals as they invoked the mercy rule. The Junior Lady Warriors routed Cedar Ridge 37-6.
Cotter’s next opponent will be Sloan-Hendrix. Mammoth Spring was eliminated by the Junior Lady Greyhounds 36-28.
Marshall took the other girls’ game by a score of 30-12 over Tuckerman. The Junior Lady Bobcats will face Izard County in the semifinals.
All three area boys’ teams that played on Saturday were one and done. Izard County fell to Cedar Ridge 51-46, Mammoth Spring lost to Sloan-Hendrix 60-22, and Marshall was bounced by Tuckerman 57-37. Cotter had a first round bye and will play Tuckerman in the semifinals on Monday.

Both of Viola’s teams were victorious on the opening day of the 1A-2 Junior District Tournament at Concord.
Mattix Rowden came up clutch as he sank the game-tying shot with just two seconds left and sealed the win at the free-throw line to push the Junior Longhorns past Rural Special 37-36. Viola was led by Rowden with 21 points.
Viola was also able to take its girls’ game 33-19 over Shirley. Morgan Newberry was the Junior Lady Longhorns’ top scorer with 19 points.
Both Viola teams will play in Monday’s semifinals starting with the girls at 4.
