One of the key bills, Senate Bill 58, which passed on Thursday, seeks to allow non-profit hospitals to operate a licensed pharmacy. The bill removes the current prohibition on non-profit, tax-exempt, or government-funded hospitals from holding a retail pharmacy permit. Additionally, it includes a provision ensuring that patients are not obligated to use the hospital’s pharmacy and must be informed of this option.
In a related development, House Bill 1442 was introduced on the same day, aiming to support patients by promoting greater freedom of choice and preventing anti-competitive practices within the pharmaceutical sector.
This legislation allows patients to select their pharmacy freely and mandates that pharmacies provide equal access to drug pricing programs. Similar to Senate Bill 58, House Bill 1442 also requires that a non-profit hospital record a patient’s choice of pharmacy.
