Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin filed a lawsuit Wednesday morning against General Motors (GM) and its subsidiary OnStar, accusing the companies of violating the Arkansas Deceptive Trade Practices Act. The lawsuit claims that GM and OnStar sold data collected from OnStar services to third parties, who then provided it to insurance companies without the consent of customers.

According to the lawsuit, insurance companies used the data to either deny coverage or raise premiums for consumers. The attorney general alleges that, despite promoting OnStar as a service designed to improve driving, safety, and vehicle performance, GM and OnStar misled customers about how their driving data was used for profit.

The sale of customer data reportedly dates back to 2015. Texas also initiated legal action related to the issue in August 2024.
