Flippin boys among Thursday’s regional tournament 1st round winners

Several area high school basketball teams were in action on Thursday as regional tournaments continued in Arkansas.

The Class 3A Region 2 Tournament wrapped up its opening round at Melbourne.
Flippin’s boys were able to secure a bid to next week’s state tournament. The Bobcats defeated Newport 52-44.
Bergman wrapped up the night by winning the other boys’ game. The Panthers got past Rivercrest 57-53.
The Melbourne girls began the day by invoking the mercy rule in the first game. The host Lady Bearkatz routed Rivercrest 75-36.
Bergman’s girls were able to join their male counterparts in Friday’s semifinals. The Lady Panthers breezed past Harrisburg 64-43.

Three area teams played their openers in the Class 1A Region 2 Tournament at West Side High School in Greers Ferry.
The Viola girls watched their season come to an end. The Lady Longhorns ended up falling to Marked Tree 53-32.
The other girls’ contest ended with Rural Special clinching a state tournament berth. The Lady Rebels put the mercy rule in effect as they routed Maynard 68-36.
Rural Special did not fare as well on the boys’ side. The Rebels’ season ended with a 75-61 loss to Crowley’s Ridge Academy.

Izard County’s boys will be in next week’s state tournament after a dramatic opener in the Class 2A Region 2 Tournament at Riverside High School in Lake City. After trailing 34-9 early in the third quarter, the Cougars made a comeback to force overtime, and Gabe Spray came away with a steal and hit the go-ahead basket with 39 seconds left in the extra period for the 53-52 win over the host Rebels. Spray led Izard County with 27 points, and Cash Arnhart added 10. The Cougars improve to 23-10 on the season.

Two area teams were in Magazine for the final opening round games of the Class 1A Region 1 Tournament.
The Lead Hill boys are guaranteed a spot in the state tournament following their 64-57 win over Scranton. The Tigers were led by Kaden Baker with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Dawson Lively scored 16 points, and Nolan Turner had 15 points and 10 boards.
Omaha’s girls came up just short of being able to continue its season into next week. The Lady Eagles were edged out by Magazine 41-40.

Ozark Mountain’s boys will be in next week’s state tournament after winning their first game in the Class 2A Region 1 Tournament at Hackett. The Bears topped Mountainburg 59-49.

In Missouri, the Bakersfield girls were bounced from the semifinals of the Class 2, District 10 Tournament at Fordland. The Lady Lions fell to the host Lady Eagles 43-24. Bakersfield’s season ends at 14-8.
