
Eight area high school basketball teams took part in the opening day of state tournament play in Arkansas.
The Class 3A State Tournament got underway at the Pioneer Pavilion on the south campus of North Arkansas College in Harrison.
Flippin watched their season come to an end in the first boys’ game as they fell to Lamar 67-44. The Bobcats’ final record is 28-12.
Melbourne’s boys were able to advance to the quarterfinals after squeaking by Lincoln 61-59. The Bearkatz improve to 27-7, and their next game will be on Friday against either Bald Knob or Prescott.
The Bergman girls were one and done in the opening game of the tournament as they lost to Lamar 58-51. The Lady Panthers’ year ends at 27-13.
The Class 2A State Tournament started at Cedar Ridge High School in Newark.
Izard County’s girls were able to eliminate Ozark Mountain by a score of 77-54. Quinn Johnson led the Lady Cougars with 22 points, Kallie Skidmore scored, 15, Makensie Yancey had 14, Olivia Spray recorded 12, and Tinley Bailey added 10 points. Izard County is now 29-4, and they’ll meet either Bigelow or Poyen in the quarterfinals on Friday. The Lady Bears will finish their season at 22-11.
Ozark Mountain did not fare any better on the boys’ side as they were doubled up by Cedar Ridge 68-34. The Bears conclude the year at 19-14.
Two area girls’ teams played their openers in the Class 1A State Tournament at Trumann.
Rayleigh Turner hit a runner right before the final buzzer to push Rural Special to a 71-69 victory over Wonderview. The Lady Rebels improve to 30-9, and their quarterfinal game will be Thursday against either Scranton or Kirby.
Jasper invoked the mercy rule in the evening session as they routed Bearden 59-29. The Lady Pirates are now 27-9, and they’ll return to the court Friday to face either Sacred Heart or Marked Tree.
In Missouri, two area girls’ teams squared off in the opener of the Class 4, District 11 Tournament at Hollister. The host Lady Tigers were able to edge out Forsyth 55-52. Hollister improves to 4-21 on the year, and they’ll take on Logan-Rogersville in Thursday’s semifinals. The Lady Panthers finish the season at 9-18.
