An Arkansas State University student from the area was recently honored with the institution’s highest award to a graduating student. Amber Yates of Salem was named this year’s R.E. Lee Wilson Award winner at the Distinguished Service and Wilson Award dinner Thursday at the Cooper Alumni Center in Jonesboro.
Yates graduated from A-State in December. She was a communication studies major in the College of Liberal Arts and Communication.
Yates took on many tasks at Arkansas State in addition to her studies. She helped resurrect the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., an organization that had not been part of campus Greek life for 16 years. Yates also volunteered as a coach at the Communication Center during her junior year on campus and returned the following year as a mentor. In addition, she served as a student ambassador with the Multicultural Center amongst other activities where she shared her time.
This past fall, Yates and fellow Distinguished Service Award honoree Jonathan Schaufler were named A-State’s homecoming king and queen. Schaufler is also from Salem.
Yates and Schaufler were among six students chosen to be a Distinguished Service Award winners. Yates’ future plans include attending graduate school, potentially focusing on higher education.
