The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration is processing a record number of REAL IDs across its 134 Revenue Offices, with more than 150,000 issued in just over a month – more than 15 times the state’s usual monthly average.
In response to the surge, the department is monitoring wait times and inventory levels at all offices. Supplies needed for REAL ID production are being shipped overnight to locations statewide to maintain service levels. Similar increases in demand are being reported in other states, contributing to a nationwide strain on REAL ID production materials.
Some offices in Arkansas temporarily reached capacity this week, prompting the redirection of customers to other nearby locations. The DFA continues to restock supplies and adjust staffing to meet demand and reduce wait times.
Officials are advising residents who do not have an urgent need for a REAL ID to consider delaying their visit until later in May. Appointment availability varies by location, and residents are encouraged to check multiple offices for open slots. Additional appointments are expected to become available as demand levels off.
Individuals without a REAL ID may be subject to additional screening by the Transportation Security Administration when boarding domestic flights. More guidance on federal identification requirements is expected as the enforcement deadline approaches.
To date, more than 850,000 Arkansas residents have obtained a REAL ID.
