The City of Briarcliff has a new mayor following the city council’s regular meeting on Tuesday evening. Robert (Bob) Markham was appointed during the meeting and will serve as mayor for the remainder of the current term until November of 2026.
The position was vacated by Mayor Martin Nicholson during the regular council meeting in March. Nicholson stated during his resignation that he “cant fix the city.” The official resolution of vacancy was then read at the April 8 meeting of council and the open position was announced a few days later across various media outlets.
Three people applied for the position including former Mayor Keith Lewis, Joshua Williamson and now appointed Mayor Bob Markham. Markham quickly found himself unopposed for the position as Lewis and Williamson had both dropped out by early May. The oath of office was accepted and certified at Tuesday’s meeting by then acting mayor and treasurer/ recorder Renate Schmitt.
The city announced Council position Ward 1 Seat 1 as vacant during the meeting Tuesday, this position includes residents in the Summit and part of the Mobile home section. Any resident residing in that ward and position can apply to Council June 10th.
The Briarcliff Water Recreational Improvement District #1 will be meeting Friday at 3 to appoint a treasurer. With a couple of vacancies open, residents interested in serving on the board can attend the meeting Friday at at 945 Scenic Drive in Briarcliff.
