Current Ozark Mountain School District Superintendent Jeff Lewis will take over as the junior high girls basketball coach at Harrison next school year. Lewis says it was an opportunity that he could not pass up. He has worked in a consolidated district, both at Jasper and Ozark Mountain, for 25 years, which he says is very challenging. The Harrison job was appealing to him because he gets to work in a non-consolidated district, and is able to coach both of his daughters that are still in school.
When asked about what made him want to return back to the sidelines, Lewis replied in an off-air interview, “Coaching is about relationships. In the big chair, there are not many student relationships being built. I miss that. I miss the day to day practices, the highs and lows, and helping shape young people.” Although being away from coaching for a years, Lewis says he isn’t too worried, and believes it will come back quick.
Lewis has 21 years of coaching experience. Most of that was as Jasper, which consisted of 11 years of boys basketball and 8 years of girls basketball. He also helped coach baseball, softball, track, golf and cross country.
Lewis says he will start at Harrison officially on July 1 but will spend time working with his new teams before then. The Ozark Mountain School Board is in the early stages of finding his successor. They are set to meet Friday to review applications, and the interview process will begin Tuesday.
