Arkansas residents who missed the May application period for public land elk hunting permits will have another opportunity during the Buffalo River Elk Festival, scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Jasper.
Three on-site permits will be drawn separately from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s (AGFC) online application process. Registration for the on-site drawing will be held at the Jasper Visitor Center from 1 to 4 on Friday and 9 to 4 on Saturday. The drawing is scheduled for 5 Saturday. Winners must be present to claim their tags.
Applicants must hold a valid Arkansas Resident Sportsman’s License and must not have 18 or more violation points. Only Arkansas residents are eligible. Hunters who already applied online are still allowed to register for the on-site drawing to increase their chances.
The elk permit drawing has been a central feature of the festival since it began in 1998. While most permits are now issued through the AGFCs online system, the festival continues to announce winners and conduct the traditional on-site “squirrel cage” drawing.
The festival also offers a range of activities and entertainment for visitors of all ages. Musical performances featuring bluegrass, country and folk artists are scheduled throughout both days. Competitions include an elk calling contest and a community talent show.
Family-friendly events include a kids’ fishing derby and a 5K race known as “Running with the Elk.” Free hourly raffles and vendor booths offering food, crafts and outdoor gear will also be available.
