Thousands of Arkansans could soon receive unexpected checks in the mail under a new unclaimed property law. Act 114 of 2025 allows the state auditor to automatically mail payments of $5,000 or less to in-state residents if ownership can be verified no claims form required.
The auditor’s office holds about $400 million in unclaimed property from sources such as abandoned bank accounts, insurance adjustments, and uncashed paychecks. With the new law, officials expect to return about $83 million to roughly 360,000 people in the coming months. The average payment is just over $100, though amounts vary.
Physical property, items over $5,000, or assets with multiple claimants still require the traditional claims process. Eligible recipients will first receive a letter notifying them of the payment, followed by a check if the letter is not returned.
Arkansans can also search the state’s unclaimed property database to see if they are owed money.
