Mountain Home woman killed when son’s homemade shotgun explodes at Stone County shooting range

A Mountain Home woman has been killed when her son’s homemade shotgun exploded when he fired it at the Sylamore Shooting Range in Stone County Tuesday evening according to Stone County Sheriff Brandon Long. The victim is identified as 64-year-old Brenda Kowalski. Her son, 23-year-old Moon Kowalski, also of Mountain Home, was injured. He was treated and released at Stone County Medical Center in Mountain View.

Sheriff Long says the two were at the shooting range at Sylamore. When the younger Kowalski fired his homemade shotgun, it exploded and a piece of the gun struck the woman in the neck. She died at the scene.

Sheriff Long says the incident is still under investigation but no charges will be filed.

The incident happened at 6:35 Tuesday evening at the shooting range which is located on Arkansas State Highway 5 north of Mountain View.
