For many Arkansans, the first step toward independence comes with passing the state driver’s license test. The Arkansas Department of Public Safety is reminding residents that the official Driver’s License Study Guide is the primary tool for preparing – and that the exam may be more challenging than some expect. The guide, produced by the Arkansas State Police, covers traffic laws, safe driving practices and road signs. It is required study for the written knowledge test, which includes 25 multiple-choice questions. Applicants must answer at least 20 correctly to pass.

Examples of questions include:

– What does a flashing red traffic light mean? (Answer: Stop completely, then proceed once safe. Treat it like a stop sign.)
– When must headlights be turned on? (Answer: From sunset to sunrise, or anytime visibility is less than 500 feet.)
– What is the legal blood alcohol concentration limit for drivers age 21 and older? (Answer: 0.08 percent)
– At what age and height must a child be secured in a safety seat? (Answer: Children under age 6 or weighing less than 60 pounds)

Officials said thorough study of the manual improves the chances of passing on the first attempt. Examiners warn that relying only on online practice tests often leads to failure.

The state offers the manual online in English and Spanish, with flashcards, an audio version and a mobile app. Printed copies are available through local revenue offices.

In 2024, more than 78,000 Arkansans took a written knowledge test, according to the Department of Public Safety.

The Arkansas Driver’s License Study Guide is available free at dps.arkansas.gov.
