Arkansas leaders are reacting after the death of Charlie Kirk, a national conservative commentator who was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon during a speaking event in Utah.

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders shared her sorrow on social media, calling the act “cowardly” and praising Kirk’s contributions to America.

Sen. Tom Cotton called the news “heartbreaking” and asked for prayers for Kirk’s family.

Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin described the assassination as “senseless and evil.” He also urged people to recommit to peaceful debate.

Arkansas Democratic Party Chairman Marcus Jones said it is important to defend free speech, even when people disagree.

Kirk, 31, was the founder of Turning Point USA, a group that promotes conservative views on college campuses. He was speaking at Utah Valley University when he was shot. Police are still searching for the suspect.
