The City of Cotter Water Department has issued a boil order for parts of the city following a water main break at Third Street and South Ave around 10 Friday night.

A news release said that the Arkansas Department of Health said the boil order was for the downtown area from Fifth Street down to Hargis Street including Fourth Street, Third Street, Second Streets, Powell Ave, Dalton Ave, Combs Ave, McLean Ave, South Ave, Tyler Ave, Bid Spring Parkway, and a portion of Cotter Road.

Cotter Water Depart said the boil order will affect around 150-200 customers following a break in a 6 inch main water line.

The ADH said the order was issued because of a possibility that contaminated water may have entered the distribution system as a result of a loss in normal system pressure from the water main break. The Powell storage tank and pump were shut off in order to replace a tee in the line.

Under a boil order, affected customers are advised that the water may not be safe for human consumption and all water used for drinking and food preparation should be boiled for at least one minute before using.

The noticed will be lifted when 1 set of 5 bacteriological samples indicate that the water is free of bacterial contamination and an adequate disinfectant level is established throughout the distribution system. The samples will be delivered to the Arkansas Department of Health in Little Rock on Monday. It takes several days to complete the test.
