Salem stayed perfect behind its punishing ground game Friday night, while Greenwood delivered the most dramatic finish of the week, converting a two-point try in the final seconds to spoil Springdale Har-Ber’s homecoming.
The Greyhounds, ranked among the top contenders in Class 3A, thumped Newport 48-12 in a battle of 2-0 teams. Salem racked up 432 rushing yards on 58 carries, led by Kaden Brink’s 172 yards on 26 attempts. Jackson Taylor added 74 yards rushing and threw for 76 yards on 6-of-14 passing. Salem spread the wealth with six different ball carriers as Newport managed just 67 yards on the ground and 76 through the air.
Elsewhere in Arkansas, Hector stayed unbeaten with a 41-18 win at Yellville-Summit, Quitman ran wild in a 64-28 victory over Izard County, and Searcy’s defense paved the way to a 19-7 win over Harrison.
In Missouri border action, West Plains moved to 2-1 with a 56-7 rout of Springfield Hillcrest, while Mountain Grove overwhelmed Ava 48-7. Forsyth notched its first win of the season in dominant fashion, blasting Hollister 50-7, and Branson cruised past Bolivar 35-6.
Among Arkansas Sports Media poll teams, top-ranked Bryant kept rolling with a 49-6 drubbing of Little Rock Parkview. No. 5 Rogers lit up the scoreboard in an 84-40 shootout against Sheridan.
But the night’s biggest drama belonged to Greenwood. Trailing Har-Ber 42-35 in the final minute, the Bulldogs scored on an 8-yard run with 23 seconds remaining. With no overtime in nonconference play, Greenwood went for two. On a gutsy call, the quarterback faked a jet sweep, kept the ball himself and surged through the middle for the winning points in a 43-42 thriller.
