A Benton High School parent was injured by gunfire during Friday’s football game against North Little Rock, authorities said.
The Benton Panthers were leading 24-7 at halftime when a shot struck a parent seated in the visitors’ bleachers. North Little Rock police are investigating whether the shot originated inside the stadium or outside and passed through the bleachers.
Players and spectators said they did not hear the gunshot at first but were directed by coaches to move to the locker room. “We didn’t know what was happening at the time,” said junior right guard Jimmy Morales. Senior wide receiver Will Carter said the team later gathered in the locker room to pray.
Game officials canceled the second half. Benton will be credited with the win, as they led at halftime.
Authorities said the injured parent sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has been released from the hospital. North Little Rock police are asking anyone with video footage from in or around the stadium to come forward.
