The 3-0 Mountain Home Bombers looked to start the season 4-0 for the second straight year. The Bombers, in front of a raucous crowd, would welcome Fort Smith Southside to Bomber Stadium to open 6a-west conference play.
The first quarter Mountain Home only ran 4 plays on offense as the Mavericks would put a stranglehold on the clock resulting in a 0-0 tie after the first quarter.
The second quarter saw Southside take an 8-0 lead after a Wilson Key touchdown reception and a converted 2 point conversion. 5 minutes later, the Bombers would dig into their bag of tricks as the hosts would score on a 42 yard flea flicker touchdown from Brantlee Phillips to Carter Adkins. After a successful 2 point conversion the teams would take an 8-8 tie into the halftime break.
Business would pick up in the 3rd quarter as Mountain Home’s Barrett Miller would punch in a 1 yard touchdown to take a 15-8 lead. Southside’s Blake Forsgren would hit Peyton Zimmerman on a 77 yard bomb to tie the game at 15-15. 5 minutes later Phillips would scamper in for a rushing touchdown of his own. After an Isaac Ballard field goal with 40 seconds left in the stanza the Bombers would take a 25-15 lead into the final 12 minutes of play.
To start the quarter, Southside’s Forsgren would hit his favorite target Zimmerman again for a 33 yard touchdown. They would trim the lead down to 25-21 after a missed point after. At the 6:50 mark Phillips would connect with Bryce Kincade for a 33 yard touchdown to put the hosts up 2 scores.
But, Southside would not go away. Knocking on the door to score, Barrett Miller would save the day and pick off Forsgren in the end zone. The very next play Miller would put the game away with an 80 yard rushing touchdown.
Head Coach Steve Ary couldn’t figure out why the Bombers had a slow first half but was thankful his kids picked it up in the 2nd half.
Listen:
Ary was thankful his “dudes” were still “dudes” despite their big workload on both sides of the ball.
