The University of Arkansas has dismissed head football coach Sam Pittman, naming offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino as the interim head coach and beginning a major staff overhaul.
Pittman, who became the Razorbacks’ 34th head coach in December 2019, compiled a 32-34 record over six seasons and led the team to three bowl victories. Arkansas fell to 2-3 on the season following a 56-13 home loss to No. 21 Notre Dame, and the decision to make a change came ahead of the team’s bye week before its Oct. 11 matchup at Tennessee.
Petrino, who previously served as Arkansas’ head coach from 2008-2011 before returning last season as offensive coordinator, has already begun reshaping his staff. Arkansas is parting ways with defensive coordinator Travis Williams, co-defensive coordinator Marcus Woodson, and defensive line coach Deke Adams, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
The Razorbacks currently rank 112th nationally in points allowed, surrendering 30 points per game, and 116th in total defense, giving up 425 yards per game.
Yurachek said a national search for a permanent head coach will begin immediately, and Petrino has expressed interest in being considered for the full-time position.
