From Oct. 1-15, Have a Heart Humane Shelter located at 657 Highway 202 in Yellville is taking part in the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters event, cutting adoption fees in order to get more dogs and cats into good homes.

Thomas Pacheco, a volunteer and board member, says Have a Heart brings in animals in two ways: strays and owner surrenders. Some live at the shelter, others are cared for by fosters including board member Vickie Rowray, who takes in so many of these animals Pacheco jokingly calls her “an extension of the shelter.” All animals receive vaccinations, food, walks, and emergency vet care when needed. All the work, he says, is done by volunteers.

Pacheco gives details on how the event lowers the cost of adoption for both dogs and cats.

Being a 100% volunteer run organization it only works as well as the people who work there, and Pacheco says their success is a reflection of everyone who participates.

Their goal is not just finding homes but also reducing the number of unwanted animals. They run spay/neuter programs, trap feral cats, and sometimes even transport animals out of state to places where they have better chances of being adopted.

Pacheco hopes this drive will help more pets from the shelter find families, and that the community will see adoption as something they can do not just for the animals, but because it reminds everyone that caring for pets is all of our responsibility.

If you want to adopt, help, or learn more, Have a Heart Pet Shelter’s office is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 to 3, and their number is 870-449-7387 or you can visit their website or Facebook page.
