Residents north of Salem may have felt a couple small jolts early Monday morning as two minor earthquakes were recorded in the area.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 2.3 magnitude quake first occured at 4:09 a.m. followed by a second at 4:15 with a magnitude of 1.9 magnitude quake. Both quakes occurred about 7 miles north-northeast of Salem, near the Missouri-Arkansas border. The quakes had a depth of roughly 8 miles and were located about 35 miles northeast of Mountain Home.

Small quakes of this size are not uncommon in northern Arkansas and southern Missouri, where minor seismic activity occasionally occurs along regional fault lines.

The events were recorded by the Center for Earthquake Research and Information at the University of Memphis and cataloged by the U.S. Geological Survey.
