Patrick Mahomes threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns, Kareem Hunt scored twice, and the Kansas City Chiefs pulled away in the second half Monday night for a 28-7 victory over the Washington Commanders at Arrowhead Stadium.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid called the first half “downright weird,” with turnovers, failed fourth-down conversions, and sloppy execution by both teams. “There wasn’t a lot of punting but there wasn’t a lot of points,” Reid said. “That doesn’t normally happen.”
After two early interceptions, Mahomes rebounded, hitting Travis Kelce for a touchdown to tie Priest Holmes for the Chiefs’ career touchdown record at 83, and connecting with Rashee Rice, who had nine catches for 93 yards in his second game back from a six-game suspension.
Kansas City (5-3) has now won four of its last five games and extended its dominance over Washington to nine straight wins, 11 of 12 overall. The last loss to the Commanders came on Sept. 18, 1983.
