A domestic dispute between a mother and her adult daughter escalated last Monday afternoon at a rural Baxter County residence, prompting law enforcement to respond and resulting in the daughter’s arrest on multiple charges, including battery and resisting arrest.

55-year-old Tosha Steed is charged with second-degree battery, obstructing governmental operations, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.

According to a report from the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 2:45 that afternoon when 911 dispatchers received a call regarding a domestic altercation at residence. The caller reported that her mother had pushed her down a staircase during an argument. The daughter, identified as Steed, told dispatchers that her mother suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and was confused at the time of the incident.

Deputies arrived on the scene to find the mother, walking along the roadway, while Steed and her boyfriend waited nearby. Medical personnel from Baxter Health Ambulance were on hand to evaluate the mother, who repeatedly stated she was not injured and refused transport to the hospital, though she expressed fear for her safety.

During initial questioning, the mother said the dispute stemmed from a conflict in the home when she and Steed began yelling at each other. She alleged that Steed had shoved her multiple times and struck her in the stomach.

Law enforcement attempted to mediate between the two parties, allowing Steed and the boyfriend to collect personal belongings before leaving for a hotel to defuse tensions. However, tensions escalated when Steed refused to exit the house, yelling threats and using profane language toward her mother. Deputies on the scene noted the odor of alcohol and marijuana emanating from Steed.

According to the deputies’ reports, Steed became physically aggressive, striking one of the deputies and resisting arrest. After repeated attempts deputies were able to restrain her, during which she also kicked and headbutted deputies. A broken canister of medical marijuana was also located on Steed during the arrest.

Steed was transported to the Baxter County Detention Center, where she continued to act disruptively, making threats toward deputies and refusing to comply with instructions. During the booking process, deputies documented minor scratches and bruises on Steed’s arms and wrists.

Sheriff’s deputies emphasized that the mother expressed understanding of the arrest and was deemed safe to remain at her residence.

Steed is free on $5,000 bond.
