An area woman has been arrested after attacking her boyfriend with garden shears and trying to run him over with his truck. Forty-eight-year-old Cheri Newark of Norwood, Missouri is facing two felony charges for the incident which happened earlier this month at the victim’s residence east of Ava.
According to the probable cause affidavit from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, when deputies arrived they found Newark and the victim both with injuries and blood on their clothes.
After talking with both of them, it was determined a verbal argument had taken place and the victim had gotten into his truck and tried to drive away. Newark entered the truck and started hitting and kicking her boyfriend and throwing items at him. The deputies noted several contusions to the victim’s torso.
The victim said he started hitting Newark in self defense and that is when she grabbed the garden shears and struck him multiple times in the head. The victim said at some point during the attack he bit her on the hand. The deputies said the victim had a three-inch laceration on the top of his head. Newark had a contusion below one of her eyes and a laceration on her thumb.
After being struck with the shears, the victim exited the truck and began running for the house. Newark then got behind the wheel and tried to run the victim over, causing him to take cover behind a tree.
After she drove past him, he ran into the house, locked the doors and called 911. Newark broke the screens off of two windows trying to make entry into the residence.
During questioning, Newark said “I would never try to run him over. If I was gonna run him over, I would run him over, you know what I’m saying?”
Newark is facing felony charges of first degree domestic assault causing serious injury and armed criminal action. She was released from jail Friday on her own recognizance.
