Arkansas State’s defense overwhelmed Troy on Saturday night, recording nine sacks and holding the Trojans to just 187 yards of total offense in a 23-10 victory at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Red Wolves (5-4, 4-1 Sun Belt Conference) tallied the second-most sacks in a single game in program history, one shy of the 10 recorded against Southern Illinois in 1989. The performance marked Troy’s lowest offensive output against an FBS opponent since 2011 and the fewest by a Sun Belt foe since 2006.

Demarcus Hendricks led the way with two sacks, while Bryan Whitehead recovered a fumble and AG McGhee intercepted a pass.

Quarterback Jaylen Raynor completed 21 of 29 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. Hunter Summers caught a 19-yard touchdown pass and finished with 70 receiving yards, while Corey Rucker added 64 yards.

The win gave A-State its first 4-1 conference start since 2017 and extended its league winning streak to four games, the longest since 2019.

Arkansas State jumped ahead early, scoring twice in the first quarter following a fumble recovery by Whitehead that set up Raynor’s touchdown strike to Summers. Clune Van Andel added three field goals, including a 53-yarder in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Troy (6-3, 4-1) managed its only touchdown on a one-yard run by Tucker Kilcrease early in the final period but couldn’t overcome the Red Wolves’ relentless pass rush.

Arkansas State will look to continue its surge when it returns home next week for another Sun Belt matchup.
