An inmate at the Baxter County Detention Center was placed back in a restraint chair after a series of violent incidents inside a detox cell last Monday.
22-year-old Sterling Welborn has been charged with second degree battery. According to reports Welborn had been restrained earlier for hitting his head against a wall, became aggressive after being removed from the chair in the evening, attempting to strike officers and resisting multiple attempts to secure him.
Staff struggled to gain control as Welborn fought and temporarily freed one arm from handcuffs. During the altercation, one deputy suffered a bloody nose, another deputy reported aggravation of a prior knee injury, and a third deputy was kicked in the groin. Deputies eventually placed Welborn back into the restraint chair and secured him without further incident.
No serious injuries to Welborn were reported, and the incident remains under investigation.
