The Arkansas State Police and Arkansas National Guard have safely disposed of more than 26,000 pounds of expired and unwanted prescription medications collected during the Arkansas Drug Take Back event on October 25.

Troopers and National Guard soldiers consolidated the medications at ASP Troop A Headquarters in Little Rock before transporting them to Clean Harbors in El Dorado for safe incineration.

“Reducing the risk of prescription drug misuse begins at home,” said Colonel Mike Hagar, Director of the Arkansas State Police. “This initiative shows the power of law enforcement and community working together to keep Arkansas safer.”

This year’s effort involved 140 law enforcement agencies and community partners at 375 collection sites across all 75 counties. Since the program began in 2010, Arkansas has collected and safely destroyed over 684,000 pounds of unused medications.

Residents are reminded that prescription drugs can be safely dropped off year-round at more than 300 permanent collection sites across the state. For locations and more information, visit ardrugtakeback.org.
