The Yellville-Summit school garden is one of the oldest continuously running school gardens in the state, dating back to 2012. This week it is being recognized by the Arkansas Department of Agriculture as one of eight schools to win an award in the 2025 Arkansas Grown School Garden of the Year Contest. Yellville-Summit is one of two schools to receive $500 in the category of Best Community Collaboration School Garden. They will receive their check and award Friday.

The garden at Yellville-Summit got its start through a research study through Arkansas Children’s Hospital called the Delta Garden Study according to Agriculture Teacher Katherine Quinn.

After that first year, Quinn went back to school to get her master’s degree and became a full time teacher.

Since 2012, the garden program has continued to grow into one of the largest in the state.

She says they are always working on ways to grow more fruits and vegetables in a more efficient manor instead of expanding the size of the gardens and orchards.

The gardens are located between the high school and junior high buildings at Yellville-Summit. The greenhouses are on the backside of the campus according to Quinn, and she says they have added little flower beds around campus as well.
