Shirley area man found dead; son charged with murder

SHIRLEY, Ark. — A Van Buren County man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 68-year-old father, according to the Arkansas State Police.

Deputies were called to the home of Russell B. Branscum on Thursday after he was found dead inside his residence on Highway 110 near Shirley. The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from Arkansas State Police investigators.

Special agents with the ASP Criminal Investigation Division identified the victim’s son, Brian J. Branscum, 31, as a suspect. He was located at a hotel in Hot Springs and taken into custody Saturday. He is charged with killing his father.

Russell Branscum’s body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine the cause and manner of death.

State police said the arrest followed a coordinated effort involving CID Companies A, C and E.
