A son who took jewelry from his mother’s home while she was out of town and pawned it, appeared in Baxter County Circuit Court/Criminal Division November 10.

Twenty-two-year-old Douglas Cheever pled guilty to theft by receiving and was sentenced to five years-probation. Victim restitution of slightly more than $2,600 was also ordered.

In early November last year, the victim reported the break-in and theft at her home and indicated Cheever was a suspect.

She said her son was aware of her plan to be out of town. The victim said several pieces of jewelry had been taken.

In addition, prescription narcotics and a wallet belonging to her deceased husband were missing.

Investigators located two pieces of the missing jewelry at a local pawn shop and when surveillance tape was reviewed, Cheever was identified as the seller.

He has been free on $5,000 bond. The first company to write the bond surrendered Cheever to the Baxter County Detention Center in late February for failure to comply with the terms and conditions set for his bond. In mid-March, a second company wrote a bond on Cheever and he was released from jail.
