Arkansas State women’s basketball holds off Jackson State

The Arkansas State Red Wolves women’s basketball team held steady late in a 75-69 win over Jackson State on Sunday afternoon at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. The victory moves A-State to 3-3 overall and 0-0 in Sun Belt play.

Bella Weary led the Red Wolves with 12 points, shooting 57 percent from the field, including a made three-pointer. Zyion Shannon added 10 points on 40 percent shooting and made two three-pointers, while Wynter Rogers nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Jackson State was led by Rhema Pegues with 21 points, hitting four of seven from three-point range.

A-State shot 46 percent overall, hitting eight of 27 from beyond the arc, and outrebounded Jackson State 37-32 for the first time this season. The Red Wolves also held a 10-point advantage in the paint, 36-26. After falling behind early to a 10-0 Jackson State run, Arkansas State settled in and took a 25-23 lead to end the first quarter. A strong second quarter, including a 7-0 run to start the period, gave the Red Wolves a cushion heading into halftime, leading 45-37.

Both teams struggled after the break, with A-State scoring just 10 points in the third quarter. Jackson State briefly took the lead in the fourth, but Weary’s clutch scoring and Mia Tarver’s late three-pointer sealed the Red Wolves’ victory.
