The Salvation Army in Mountain Home is preparing to host its annual Thanksgiving community meal on Wednesday, offering a sit-down dinner for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic. The meal will be served from 3 until 6 at the Salvation Army’s youth building at 121 Highway 201 North, located between the church and the family thrift store.

Leaders with the organization say the Thanksgiving gathering is meant to provide a place for neighbors, friends and those without family nearby to share a meal, slow down and enjoy fellowship during the holiday season. After several years of drive-through service, Majors John and Michelle with the Salvation Army say they are excited to finally sit with guests again.

Preparations for the meal have been underway for months, with help from the Salvation Army advisory board and community partners. Thirty donated turkeys were dropped off at Holy Smokes to be prepared for the event, and volunteers are planning for roughly 550 meals.

Organizers say the community’s generosity has been overwhelming, and the event continues to reveal how widespread food insecurity is in the region.

Majors John and Michelle go on to explain that it “takes an army” to serve such a large amount of people.

The Salvation Army is still seeking volunteers to help prepare food, plate meals, serve guests and clean up. Those interested can call the Mountain Home Salvation Army office to be added to the volunteer schedule.

The organization says it will continue offering volunteer opportunities throughout the holiday season.
