Preliminary data from the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) show tuberculosis cases in the state are declining after reaching a peak in 2024.

ADH reports 71 TB cases recorded so far in 2025 through the end of November. Non-finalized totals from last year show Arkansas had 119 cases in 2024 – the first time the state had surpassed 100 cases in 15 years. In comparison, ADH recorded 83 TB cases in 2023.

According to health officials, tuberculosis is an airborne infection caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria most commonly attack the lungs, but can also infect the kidneys, spine and brain. While not everyone infected becomes sick, officials warn the disease can be fatal if left untreated.
