3 vehicle crash ends with 2 dead; 5 injured east of Jonesboro

Two people were killed and five others were seriously injured in a multi vehicle crash Friday evening in Lake City, a community about 20 miles east of Jonesboro, according to the Arkansas State Police.The collision occurred at 6:33 p.m. Friday on Highway 18 at the Lake City Bridge. A preliminary report from Arkansas State Police states that a 2013 Ford driven eastbound by Brad King, of Manila, crossed the center line and struck a westbound 2023 Volkswagen driven by Kennedy Riggs, of Blytheville.

A 2014 Toyota then collided with the Volkswagen in a secondary impact.

King died from injuries sustained in the crash. A minor riding in the Volkswagen was also killed, according to the report.

Riggs and four additional minors were injured. Arkansas State Police Communications Director Cindy Murphy said the injured were transported to hospitals in Jonesboro, Memphis and Little Rock. King was initially taken to an area hospital, where he later died.

The driver of the Toyota was not injured and had no passengers.

Lake City Mayor Cameron Tate reported Friday evening that a head-on collision had closed Highway 18 east of the city. Tate initially stated that four people had been killed, but state police confirmed Sunday that the crash resulted in two fatalities.
